Alitalia, in line with what is currently happening with the major European carriers, segment focuses on low-cost and acquires Wind Jet, airline based in Catania, founded in 2003 by the patron of Catania football Antonino Pulvirenti.
Currently Wind Jet is the first low cost airline in Italy, the sixth for domestic market share (6,2% in 2011) and has bases in Catania, Palermo and Rimini.
Alitalia so, after acquiring Air One, buy an airline which “aims to acquire the know-how in flights low cost, completing and enriching its portfolio of products and expertise”.

There remain concerns about the future acquisition. A few months ago Senator and Chairman of the Liberal PD Enzo Bianco said that "the attention of Alitalia to South, and in flights to Catania and Sicily in particular, has gradually diminished.
